So what are the best Western pc rpg games?

Posted in pc rpg games  on March 3rd, 2009 by: ian

This article attempts to answer that eternal question…

Unfortunately I tend to agree with the comments after the article itself – apart from the couple of older games, the best all seem to be the ones that have come out most recently (Oblivion, Fable 2, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect are all mentioned).  Definitely cannot agree with Oblivion – playing it just made me want to wish for Oblivion!  I can’t really comment about Fable 2 or Fallout 3 but, while definitely good, I wouldn’t consider Mass Effect to be in the best 10 computer role-playing games ever created.  And for good measure, I agree with the first poster that World of Warcraft shouldn’t really be included in this – where’s the role-playing?

balduesgate2 So what are the best Western pc rpg games?

Baldurs Gate 2 - the best rpg game ever?

I would certainly agree with Planescape though – easily one of the best pc rpg games ever written.  I would also include Baldurs Gate 2 and Ultima Underworld (even though these days the interface does suffer – it can still stand with the best).  Add The Witcher to the list and I think we are really getting somewhere and for my next game in the list I will have to include Fallout.

This leaves one game left for our new, improved best 10 list, so what would you include to complete this list?

RPGamer Best of 2008 Editors’ Choice Awards

Posted in news, pc rpg games  on February 11th, 2009 by: ian

RPGamer have come out with their editors’ choice awards for 2008 for rpg games of the previous year.  Have a look and browse around the different categories (there are a lot of them!)

In the PC/MMO section we have my current favourite (The Witcher) coming in a number 2, and as they say, ‘The Witcher had a somewhat quiet release, but quickly gained reputation as one of the best PC RPGs in some time’.

In the RPG of the Year category we of course have Fallout 3 – interesting that it did not get into the PC section though.

More top rpg games of 2008

Posted in news, pc rpg games  on January 7th, 2009 by: ian

The website OMG RPG have listed their top rpgs of 2008.  While this list of not exclusively pc based it does includes four pc rpg games, ‘The Witcher: Enhanced Edition’ at number 9, ‘Mass Effect’ at 7, ‘World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King’ at 4 and ‘Fallout 3′ in second place.  They also list ‘Fable 2′, which as I mentioned in a previous post, looks set for a pc release – I wonder if it’ll make a best of 2009 list?

As I’ve already mentioned, The Witcher More top rpg games of 2008 is one of my favourites of the current crop of computer role-playing games and as they say, ‘This is definitely a game all PC gamers should have in their library’ – there’s not much more you can really say about that.

Mass Effect More top rpg games of 2008 is pure Bioware, if you enjoy Bioware games then you’ll love it, however if you don’t then you won’t, simple as that.  I think by now Bioware have decided what they do well, they know how they want their games to look and feel so you now know what you are getting with them.  Mass Effect is a sci-fi rpg where you take on the role of Commander Shepard, effectively a special forces commando, and attempt to save the universe… again.

I don’t really know much about Wrath of the Lich King as I’m not really into MMORPGs so I’ll let you read the article if you want to find out more about it.

Finally, Fallout 3 More top rpg games of 2008, well I’ve got to start with a quote from the article – ‘I could have easily rated this as number one; but maybe I am just a bit sick of all the awesome reviews and non-stop attention it is getting’, I don’t know why but I just love that quote!  Anyway, I have to admit that I haven’t actually played Fallout 3 myself yet, so I’m welcome you feedback of what you thought of it.

New patch released for The Witcher Enhanced Edition

Posted in news  on December 29th, 2008 by: ian

CD Projekt have released a patch for The Witcher: Enhaned Edition.  This patch seems to be pretty minor – it only covers a couple of fixes:

1) EAX technology problems – this patch resolves problems related to EAX technology, which did not operate properly in conjunction with the game, generating critical errors when activated in the Game Options panel.
2) The patch also eliminates the blur (deriving from “glow” effect augmentation) remaining after cut scenes and dialogue sequences.

If you’re interested in downloading the patch, it can be found here.

The Witcher coming to consoles…

Posted in news  on December 18th, 2008 by: ian

But they still have two pc projects on the go!  There’s an article here discussing the planned port of The Witcher to consoles.  The screenshots look pretty good and if it’s a decent port, console gamers won’t know what has hit them!  It was a fantastic game on the pc with far more depth than most console games I’ve encountered so it could be revolutionary for these platforms (yes, I am pc elitist!)

However, CDProjekt have also stated that they currently have 2 pc projects that they are currently working on.  There’s no more information about them yet, but if they’re anywhere near as good as The Witcher then we should be in for a real treat!  I’ll be bringing you all the latest information about these games as I find them.
