Another new release – Torchlight!

Posted in news, pc rpg indies  on October 31st, 2009 by: ian

I’ve got yet another new release to report on, this time from Runic Games.  Their game, called Torchlight, is an action rpg, very much in the style of Diablo or Fate.  Like these games, there is a central ‘safe hub’, with a dungeon filled with evil nasties beneath it and, like these games, it is your job to save the day.  Cue plenty of action adventure as you hack your way to victory.

Here is the youtube trailer of the game and if you are interested then you can get it from the game website here.

Another indie role-playing game – The Three Musketeers

Posted in news, pc rpg games, pc rpg indies  on October 27th, 2009 by: ian

If you can think back to this blog post, I asked which books should be turned into games – well, according too dingogames, the answer to that question is The Three Musketeers!  The game follows in the footsteps of the books as you, ‘Take on the role of d’Artagnan in his quest to become a Musketeer’.

You can have a look at the trailer below:

As you can see, it is a top down game with rather basic graphics, hopefully the gameplay will match up with the old-skool style.  If you want a further look at it then you can find it here and you can download a free demo to see if you like it.

New indie rpg game – Millenium: A New Hope

Posted in news, pc rpg indies  on October 12th, 2009 by: ian

I always try to give indie rpgs a bit of press when I find them, so here is Millenium: A New Hope.  Made by the indie developers Aldorlea, the team behind the Laxius Force series.  If you like JRPG style role-playing games then it might be worth checking out.  You can find it here.

Also, if you are the sort who likes to know something about a game before you buy it then you can find reviews of it here and here.  It is planned as an episodic game with the first release out now and the next planned for December.

Have you played it?  If so, let me know what you thinkof it – especially do you think episodic content will work or will you only buy a game in a single installment?

Review of Depths of Peril

Posted in pc rpg indies  on February 25th, 2009 by: ian

There is a review up at gamefocus for the indie pc rpg games Depths of Peril.  You take on the role of a barbarian chieftain and your mission is to protect the town of Jorvik until finally managing to rule it!

It features a mix of rpg and strategy and gamefocus say of it, ‘Indie RPG’s take another leap forward with a very fun game from Soldak Entertainment. Though not for the gamer who is new to RPG’s this is one game most RPG fanatics should take a serious look at.’

If you are interested in an old school rpg then you definitely do a lot worse than having a look at this.

The best indie pc rpg games of 2008

Posted in pc rpg indies  on December 29th, 2008 by: ian

GameTunnel have created a list of their best five indie rpgs of 2008. The list includes ‘Kivi’s Underworld’, ‘Savage 2: A Tortured Soul’, ‘Avernum 5′, ‘Mount and Blade’ and ‘The Spirit Engine 2′.

The Spirit Engine 2

Between them they represent the best that is currently on offer in the form of RPGs developed by independant studios and I will be looking at all of these and a lot of other indie pc rpg games in the coming months.

‘Kivi’s Underworld’ is a light rpg that is easy to pick up, play for 15 to 30 minutes and then put down again.  ‘Savage 2′ is an online PvP game, while ‘Avernum 5′ is an rpg in the classic sense – dozens of hours of questing through an elaborate storyline.  ‘Mount and Blade’ is a freeform, combat-oriented game.  Finally, ‘The Spirit Engine 2′ is a beautiful 2d side-scroller, with a deep storyline and fantastic character interactions.

If you are a fan of rpg games then you definitely owe it to yourself to have a look at the games listed.  Let us know if GameTunnel have missed your favourite pc rpg game, or, if you have played any these games, let us know your thoughts about them.
