Another new release – Torchlight!

Posted in news, pc rpg indies  on October 31st, 2009 by: ian

I’ve got yet another new release to report on, this time from Runic Games.  Their game, called Torchlight, is an action rpg, very much in the style of Diablo or Fate.  Like these games, there is a central ‘safe hub’, with a dungeon filled with evil nasties beneath it and, like these games, it is your job to save the day.  Cue plenty of action adventure as you hack your way to victory.

Here is the youtube trailer of the game and if you are interested then you can get it from the game website here.

Another indie role-playing game – The Three Musketeers

Posted in news, pc rpg games, pc rpg indies  on October 27th, 2009 by: ian

If you can think back to this blog post, I asked which books should be turned into games – well, according too dingogames, the answer to that question is The Three Musketeers!  The game follows in the footsteps of the books as you, ‘Take on the role of d’Artagnan in his quest to become a Musketeer’.

You can have a look at the trailer below:

As you can see, it is a top down game with rather basic graphics, hopefully the gameplay will match up with the old-skool style.  If you want a further look at it then you can find it here and you can download a free demo to see if you like it.

Like Gothic? Love Risen!

Posted in news, pc rpg games  on October 21st, 2009 by: ian

Well, Risen is finally out, and, according to the reviews, is looking like the next Gothic (but with a different world and without those annoying copyright issues!) As CrispyGamer says, ‘Risen is a solid game that religiously follows the design of the Gothic series. It would even be fair to say that the game is a wholesale rip-off of JoWooD’s RPG under another name. But who cares?’

Who cares indeed?  Like Gothic, combat is a killer and good luck surviving to the mid-game, but this is what a lot of people, including myself, want in a game – challenge!  Also have a look at the College News site for another great review, or look at the official blog itself, which also includes a link to the demo.

If you want, you get get Risen from Amazon Like Gothic? Love Risen!.  Finally, here is the trailer.  Enjoy!!!

New indie rpg game – Millenium: A New Hope

Posted in news, pc rpg indies  on October 12th, 2009 by: ian

I always try to give indie rpgs a bit of press when I find them, so here is Millenium: A New Hope.  Made by the indie developers Aldorlea, the team behind the Laxius Force series.  If you like JRPG style role-playing games then it might be worth checking out.  You can find it here.

Also, if you are the sort who likes to know something about a game before you buy it then you can find reviews of it here and here.  It is planned as an episodic game with the first release out now and the next planned for December.

Have you played it?  If so, let me know what you thinkof it – especially do you think episodic content will work or will you only buy a game in a single installment?

More Risen goodies!

Posted in news, pc rpg games  on September 30th, 2009 by: ian

The first Risen previews are starting to roll in now. The first of these is at RockPaperShotgun and describes a brief play-through of an early version and Alec describes his thoughts of the game and also includes some YouTube making of clips.  The second is at PCGZine and describes a more in-depth play-through.

Overall it sounds quite promising – in a this is an early version of the game and still needs to be polished kind of way, so it’s definitely one that I’ll be keeping an eye on.  As a final goody you can find the manual for Risen here

Impressions of Dragon Age and Divinity II

Posted in news, pc rpg games  on September 16th, 2009 by: ian

If you are interested in either Dragon Age or Divinity II then you should check out RPGamer’s PAX Impressions of these games.  You can find the Dragon Age preview here and the Divinity II preview here.

I’m really looking forward to Dragon Age, but I think Divinity will go onto my ‘ones to watch list’

and I’ll keep an eye on it.  With Dragon Age you pretty much know that you’ll be getting a fun game with an immersive story (something I always really like)  but it sounds like Bioware are really going all out to make the preview experience memorable.  If they’re half as creative in the game as they seem to be in the previews then it should be great fun!

What games are you looking out for in the rest of year?

Fallout Wars

Posted in news, pc rpg classics, Uncategorized  on September 14th, 2009 by: ian

Looks like Bethesda and Interplay are going to be having some fun.  According to this thread at the rpgcodex, Bethesda are suing Interplay over their distribution of Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics via Good Old Games.  Now obviously I don’t know all the details but it does seem just a little bit petty and I’n not really sure how many people would get confused that The Fallout Trilogy and Fallout 3 might not actually be the same game!!!

Anyway, have a look at the thread and let me know what you think – do Bethesda have a valid case or is this another instance of legalism gone mad?

RPGamer Best of 2008 Editors’ Choice Awards

Posted in news, pc rpg games  on February 11th, 2009 by: ian

RPGamer have come out with their editors’ choice awards for 2008 for rpg games of the previous year.  Have a look and browse around the different categories (there are a lot of them!)

In the PC/MMO section we have my current favourite (The Witcher) coming in a number 2, and as they say, ‘The Witcher had a somewhat quiet release, but quickly gained reputation as one of the best PC RPGs in some time’.

In the RPG of the Year category we of course have Fallout 3 – interesting that it did not get into the PC section though.

Dragon Age delayed and Mass Effect 2 announced

Posted in news  on February 10th, 2009 by: ian

RPGamer have an article up stating that Dragon Age, from Bioware has been delayed from the first half of 2009 to the second half (so, release could be any time from July then).  You can find more information here.

On a brighter note though, EA have announced that the intended release date for Mass Effect 2 will be sometime in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year – so we can be looking forward to it any time from the beginning of 2010.  Again, this news is from RPGamer and can be found here.

GameBanshees rpg games of 2008

Posted in news  on February 3rd, 2009 by: ian

GameBanshee have their game of the year list up for 2008 rpg games.  It’s broken into categories, including ‘Best Story/Writing’, ‘Best Graphics’, ‘Best Sound/Music’, ‘Most Anticipated of 2009′, ‘Independant RPG of the Year’, ‘RPG Hybrid of the Year’ and ‘RPG of the Year’.  Each category has a winner and a runner-up.  This list seems to be a veritable who’s who of games that I haven’t managed to play yet, including ‘Fable 2′ in several spots – which I’m now not going to get to play, thanks Lionhead!

The game of the year is hardly surprising (‘Fallout 3′ in case you couldn’t guess) but there is also a string showing by indie RPGs, with both ‘Mount and Blade’ and ‘Kings Bounty’ getting awards.  Most anticipated of 2009 is ‘Diablo 3′, though, as they state, ‘To be honest, we don’t really expect Blizzard’s action RPG sequel to make it on store shelves in 2009′.  So my most anticipated RPG is going to be ‘Dragon Age’.

If you want to see yet another list of the rpg games of 2008 then check out the article – it’s slant is especially good if you’re interested in indie games.
